Andy's method makes sense but people have been successful with fertilizing early. It makes me think how much of a detriment it is to fertilize early. I know someone who seeded a new construction this year in summer and fertilized early and it came out fine. He's in Saskatoon so summer isn't as hot as in the US so that's a factor. Maybe it's just one of those things that it's a risk but depending on weather conditions maybe you can get away with it.

Yes what Andy recommends makes a lot of sense. If the grass naturally goes into s&p then there should be a reason for it. I don't want to sacrifice root depth just to fill in the grass quicker. Having said this you do see threads like Paul's where he started to fertilize at two weeks and things worked out great for him. I was planning to go the way of fertilizing at around two weeks but now I'm not sure. When we get to that point I'll ask the grass what it would like and let everyone know what it tells me lol.

So it's day 15 from seed down and things are progressing nicely. There is good germination in most areas. Even an area of concern beside the fence in the side yard is starting to germinate. There is still a lot of germination going on in many areas now over two weeks in. I'm still watering 3 times a day which seems to be working out well.

I've gone over several times wether to start early apps of urea, I've decided to go ahead and put down about .25 lb N per k with urea starting today. My reasoning is with the weather getting very cool for late August early September I think I'd like to get things rolling and thickening out a bit. Hopefully I made the right choice by going this route. Here are some day 15 pics.

Pretty aggravated today as this morning I went out to look at my bewitched pots and was greeted with the sight of all but 7 of the 30 pots completely destroyed from what I'm guessing is some raccoons. They were doing so well too. Other than the chance of a squirrel or two digging in them I didn't think anything would have done such damage to them. It's not that they were just a bit torn up, they were thrown on the ground and completely destroyed. I have 7 left but that's not as many as I wanted in case I need to do any plug planting. Oh well, hopefully the lawn fills out and doesn't need any plugs.

Oh, well, now that's one more thing I'm going to worry about. Wonder what about the pots attracted the raccoons?

That's the thing, I can't remotely figure out why they would want to get into them. There's been two raccoons that follow each other, out and about almost every evening when I'm watering the lawn, so I'm almost sure it's them. The only thing I can think is they were thirsty and the trays under the pots were full with water so maybe they decided to push all the pots over to get to the water. Oh well, just need to stay the course.

Sorry to hear about the pots. On the other hand germination looks great for 15 days.

Thanks, I'm glad you think the germination looks good. Sometimes I'm not sure if things are on track or not being I've never seeded kbg before and it progresses so slowly. I check out all the previous reno threads and things do seem to be going ok for me when comparing the pics of others before me. Just have to trust the process and hope things continue to fill out.

It's looking good man. I don't think you'll need the pots. Your germination looks similar to my 2015 reno and I didn't end up using any pots. I had bare/thin areas but urea made it spread and fill in. Also, whatever doesn't fill in this year will fill in next year. Just get your Pre-M down to avoid weeds.

Thanks guys. I feel ok about how things are going so far, but it's somewhat less stressful be able to here from others if they think it is going ok or not, so I appreciated the encouragement.

Day 22 pics. Still lots of bare and thin areas. Hard to tell from the pics as the tree is shading out the bad areas. It has come along since week two though.

Do you guys think this is poa a? Or maybe quack? Its not bad but It's poping up in a few areas. Hoping it's not triv. It pulls out very easy so I've been pulling it when I can. It's too early to treat with tenacity but when I can do you think I should do a blanket spray over the hole lawn?

Couple more pics

This is the corner where a large truck just had to turn too tight and crush the grass edge.

This is the side yard. The area beside the fence really never came in good so I dropped a bit more seed/peat moss yesterday.

Its looking really good. Can't wait to see how it looks in the spring after it thickens up. Remember that it's KBG, it will thicken up on its own. By next year at this time, you will easily have the nicest grass in the neighborhood.

When I seeded mine last year it, was way thinner with way less germination than yours. Great work.

Looking good! Where are you in ON? Looks like you still have lots of time before first frost you should have a lawn by then.

Thanks guys. I'm about 30 mins east of Toronto and close to Lake Ontario so yeah I still have a good amount of time before first frost. With how it's come on this last week I'm definitely thinking I'll get in a few cuts before the end of the season, so I picked up a used reel mower hoping it will be a be more gentle on the new grass. Can't wait to give it its first trim.

Very nice, by next year the stop sign next to your lawn will not be needed, people will stop because of your lawn.
