KBGkicksazz lawn project

Post by KBGkicksazz » April 20th, 2018, 8:38 am

Ok guys here is my project. New construction bare bones project.

Will have to get seed down now and take what I can get and likely RE do it in the fall. At least by then I’ll have some turf and soil amendments already going.

Also plan to put in some extensive shrub and perennial beds.

If your builder didn’t seed it you’ll want to do that you can hold the soil. Probably smart to do that now, take the summer to get your beds in, establish irrigation and get your amendments going. Then in the early fall you can begin the full reno process with the seed of your choice.

My body is so sore from two days of moving I don’t think I could even lift the fertilizer bags right now.

I can see some very thin blades coming up I will round up the whole yard before seeding.

House looks great.

Obviously I'm in a very different climate in NC, but I'm always concerned about spring renovations. Usually it's a constant fight with weeds, water and germination, but you'll have better luck than I would (and have had in the past).

If you think you won't be happy with the spring reno, have you considered seeding perennial rye grass? You can spray it out this summer, it germinates quickly and can provide erosion control. It will also look great and give you an almost instant lawn.

I thought about it but I’d rather get what KBG turf I can now.

I’m near the coat in NH so our summers our much milder than NC

Landscaper is coming over to quote and irrigation system on Saturday. Hopefully I can fit into my Budget.

Is that sod quality seed? 0.15% other crop seed? I honestly can't remember if they all read "0%" on sod quality or not.

Hopefully you'll have a cool summer in the northeast. What's your irrigation strategy?

I’m waiting on quotes for a system. Hopefully they don’t scare me with the cost.

Otherwise I will use hoses and my portable impact head sprinklers. I’ll leave them in place and use a T at my spigots to keep the seed moist.

Tag says zero weed seed. Not sure what is other crop?

Got a quote for 2900 and having system installed.

I’m on a well and the quote includes the plumbing part as well.

He will be using Hunter I-20 heads and their wifi based controller. It usues local temp and rainfall data to adjust the system. I’m sure it will take some getting used too.

Saturday I bought and had delivered my initial shrubs and perennials. Need to get them in the ground next week before the irrigations system gets installed so the bed areas are defined.

Getting my shrubs beds established. I will be mulching everything in next week. The area along the property line I have a guy who will be coming to scrap off the barnyard growth before the mulch does down.

My Wife hates the patina chicken but I told her he stays lol

Sounds like everything is coming along. Good call on keeping the chicken.

Careful with the "other crop seed". Most make sure they find 0%. I believe the other crop can be anything that is intentionally grown even if it's for agricultural use such as seed for pasture, other grass seed such as fescues, rough bluegrass (poa trivialis and annua), etc. Most weeds can easily be taken care of but some are darn near impossible unless you use glypho.

Should I not use the seed? It was around 125 ish dollars.

It’s a custom mix so can’t return it.

That's your call on whether or not to use it but I would say most on here would find some seed with 0% other crop. At .15% it doesn't sound like much but the seed count adds up. It's different depending on cultivar but let's say your kbg has 2 million seeds per pound. Of those 2 million seeds per pound 3,000 will be "other crop". I'm not sure how many pounds of seed you purchased but let's just say 30 lbs. That adds up to 90,000 "other crop seeds" you'll be seeding in your lawn.

Your bound to get some weed pressure even if going with 0% other crop. I fallowed for a year and half, used a tttf + kbg last fall with 0% weed and other crop, and still ended up with some poa annua this spring. Most weeds are easy to get rid of but not all. The cost of herbicide to try and control unwanted weeds could add up to more than $125 in no time. The grass seed ends up being the cheapest part of a lawn reno so why take the chance.

I'm sure others with more experience will chime in but I'm confident most will agree.

Worry about the noxious weed seeds. I think you can work with some "other crop seed". See this.

Thanks I’ll use the seed. I’m waiting for irrigation guy to get the system installed so this is a spring seeding so if the weeds get too much I’ll kill what lawn does establish and do a fall seeding. Right now I need to build some Turf as I have a dirt patch lawn.

I’m going to hit the lawn with glyphosate a few days before he installs then again after he turns over the soil with the trenches he makes installing the system.

The seed will be fine. Some of us lawn nuts get too carried away with details sometimes.

One thing that will help after the soil gets turned over by the irrigation trenches is watering the yard before glypho to try and get any weed seed to sprout. You can always spot seed in the fall if you have any bare spots from too much weed pressure. Kbg spreads nicely so it will eventually fill in anyways. You might not get enough weed pressure to where it causes many bare spots. I planted extra seed along with wood line so I had clumps of grass I could transplant if needed. Pretty much the same thing as people planting pots. You could possibly do the same thing if you wanted too.

We went two summers with a dirt lawn due to stump removal, drain tile, water main, and some other work. It really sucked having dirt for so long. Plus, our side yard is sloped enough for a walkout so heavy rains caused washouts. I don't blame you one bit for wanting to seed in the spring to get a lawn growing.

Best of luck. I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Hot the rear foundation shrub bed in. I heavily dosed the grass in the picture with round up the day before I planted and mulched the bed.

Tomorrow I will zap what little patches of grass I have with the Home Depot branded glyphosate.

Irrigation is scheduled to get installed this week. Hurray!
