KBGKA side yard new lawn

Post by KBGkicksazz » July 29th, 2018, 6:10 pm

I will have a separate thread for my side yard. Still waiting for irrigation to get installed and for garage contractor to finish the paving but today I hit the side yard with Round up to start fallowing.

Here is what I’ll be seeding with midnight, blueberry, and prosperity as my mix.

My contractor is behind and now the work won’t be done until the 15th or so and can’t properly fallow as they will be running equipment over that are and then the irrigation guy will disturb the soil as well.
Will have to push back my seed down date to get a proper kill off any existing weeds.

I feel for you, and know how it is with having to wait for contractors. I was in a similar position in a fall renovation a few years ago...

I'll have to look back and see what my seed-down date ended up being. I think I ended up being as late as one could possibly be and still have the new grass survive winter. It never got long enough to mow before winter.

We should link up one day. I’m not far from UNH.

The rain messed up the concrete pad timing so it comes down to the weather.

My front lawn is less than ideal but it is spreading and the weeds will get taken care of this fall and then with preM next spring.

I should have done an all PRG lawn for a year then once I got turf into the soil I should have killed it all then reno but is what it is. New construction lawn only so much I can do to amend the soil the first couple years this all comes down to patience now.

My desired seed-down date had been August 20. I had been waiting for my septic tank to be replaced on August 19th. I waited, and waited, and waited for the contractor to install the septic tank. Ultimately, by the time I concluded I couldn't wait any longer, my seed-down date became September 9th, 2015. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=17641&start=20#p249428

Below are photos of the lawn going into winter on October 21, 2015. It looked pretty good from a distance, but the overhead view showed how thin it really was. By the end of June the next year it was pretty good, at least until the results of my pushing it too hard that spring revealed its ugly head in the form of fungal problems. Sigh.

That’s pretty much how my front lawn is now if you drive by when cut it’s not that bad looking but from upstairs windows you can see the bare spots I’m hoping my lawn takes off once temps drop in couple weeks then I get give it some nitrogen I’m stuck in wait mode now.

I bought 350 ft of Pennington wood fiber seed blankets to help on my slopes and near the driveway for places where I have bare spots and the major water run off areas I probably should have used this during the spring seeding.

Hoping this helps my success rate of germination.

Still waiting on contractor to finish his work.

Garage contractor is supposed to finish grading tomorrow and the side yard irrigation goes in Friday AM!
So I’ll still hit a good window for seeding and the temps are going to be 80F with overnight lows in the high 50s.

I mowed the weeds that have grown while waiting.

Friday I’ll hit the yard with Round Up then seed with a Tenacity app on Saturday afternoon.

Plan is finally coming together.

Using the 5 ml per 2 gallons over 1000 square feet.

I’m pretty anal and I use twine on the ground to mark my areas so I get it pretty exact. It doesn’t matter but I seed first because I like to have my walking on the new seed gives it that much more soil contact and you end up walking over entire lawn anyways. Every little bit help.

I also mix in 1.5 oz of non ionic surfactant as there’s going to be dying crabgrass and I want get good penetration.

If you're not comfortable in metric measurements, 5 ml is essentially a teaspoon.

If your tenacity did not come with a syringe go to CVS or Walgreens and get one. They are measured in ml and give you precise dosing.

Contractor did not show up and my irrigation install got cancelled.

My contractor I don’t believe a word he says anymore.

I’m so pissed.

Applied the Home Depot generic glyphosate today at 4pz rate.

As you can see by the piles of material my contractor still not done and I’ll have to fallow again after he drives around on the yard and disturbs the soil again.

I’ve got 99.9% dead zone I have a couple individual stragglers I need to zap.

Contractor has totally left me hanging and now I’m in a real pinch waiting.

Hopefully I can get seed down next weekend it’s going to be Low 90s Monday to Wednesday so would not have seeded now anyways.

Thanks Andy next threat of thunderstorms is Tuesday afternoon when the heat breaks.

Today has been a steady 8-10 MPH Breeze which had me watering much more as things dry out pretty quick.

Here’s the other big part of my side yard reno.

I’m waiting for my garage to get put in so but the the excavated are next to the slab I got the shrub and perennials in. I hit the jackpot at Lowe’s they are doing a 50% off fire sale and I got all the hostas for 2 bucks a piece. Once these mature I’ll never have to buy a hosta again I can just divide them.

I watered in the mulch and then walked on it to compact it in so it does not wash wash out. Next spring I’ll make a sprinkler system so I don’t need to hand water them and put a head on a post and water everything over the top.

It’s a pre built garage so they won’t do any damage to the bed once the garage goes in.

Lot of work and I have a bad arm so takes me forever to get yard projects done :blackeye:

Going to be 89-95 until Friday. Not a good start.

These temps are going to fry my seed :(
