Re: Sleepless in Rexford - Scheming
Andy, what are you feelings on renovating the dead parts with Bewitched monostrand? Point of clarification, monostrand means no other seed types mixed, correct? Single strand, in this case Bewitched. Should I stay away from monostrand? I would also like to overseed with this seed as well to get it into the rest of the lawn.
According to seedsuperstore.com overseeding is at a rate of 1lb per 1k/sqf and seeding (new lawn) is 2lb per 1/sqf. At a rate of 1.5lb per 1k/sqf (average of overseed at 1lb and seed/repair at 2lb) would mean I need 50lb for 30k sqf. Seedsuperstore sells Bewitched for $395, not sure I can find it cheaper anywhere else.

Re: Sleepless in Rexford - Scheming
I personally would not seed Bewitched into a NoMix (what you have) lawn - it's going to be far too dark and the lawn will not look right (dark areas where it dominates, lighter elsewhere). Also, KBG doesn't do very well seeded into a lawn with mature PRG.ndy, what are you feelings on renovating the dead parts with Bewitched monostrand? Monostands are beautiful, but you have to be decisive when disease attacks. There is no time to "try this, try that" - disease moves quickly in a monostand.
BTW, it's "cultivar or "strain", not "strand".
For price-checking, try Preferred Seed in Buffalo. Prices are better, and they will get it to a location close to you for free.

Re: Sleepless in Rexford - Scheming
I hadn't considered seeding into my builders mix and how it would look. I really don't want to completely kill off 31k sqf. I don't have any machinery so it will be renovating by hand on a very large area. I was hoping between repairs and overseeing everywhere else to get good seed in. About 12k or so of the lawn is pretty dead so that will be almost like a new seeding.andy10917 wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 6:28 amI personally would not seed Bewitched into a NoMix (what you have) lawn - it's going to be far too dark and the lawn will not look right (dark areas where it dominates, lighter elsewhere). Is there a grass that would do better with a gradual transition to a better quality cultivar?

Or "variety".
What does that mean...gradual transition to a better cultivar? Do you mean what should you overseed with if sections of your lawn die out?KnickLeDime wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 7:01 amIs there a grass that would do better with a gradual transition to a better quality cultivar?

My apologies for calling it strand... Noted... Cultivar, variety or strain.Green wrote: ↑April 18th, 2019, 2:30 pmOr "variety".

Yes my question was in regards to overseed as I plan to repair the dead areas and then overseed the rest of the lawn with the same strain. Andy brought up a good point... Bewitched or similar strain in dead areas which will be repaired will look quote different from the surviving no name builder grass. So my thought was what if I overseed the surviving lawn with the same cultivar as the repair..? Will that evn things out a bit more? But then again andy also said that bewitched may not do well overseeding into the surving lawn.
So in short... Any recommendations on what seed to repair and overseed with?

Hey, KnickleDime, here's a young Bewitched monostand 90 miles south of you (SLYDER27's lawn) - it will probably darken by another two shades by the time it is 3 years old. I wonder if he ever finished mowing. Acceptable?

Re: Sleepless in Rexford - Scheming
OK - then here's the history of the front yard: a year before we transformed it, it had been owned by a 85-year old shut-in woman and was overgrown with out-of-control hedges, brambles, and erosion for 30+ years and there was barely anything grass-like growing on it.
It can be done.
It can be done.

But this was a clean kill and sed and not spot repair or overseed...right? I may need to do a 50/50 mix with something else.andy10917 wrote: ↑April 18th, 2019, 10:06 pmOK - then here's the history of the front yard: a year before we transformed it, it had been owned by a 85-year old shut-in woman and was overgrown with out-of-control hedges, brambles, and erosion for 30+ years and there was barely anything grass-like growing on it.

Today was edging around a big tree and dug up about 15 grubs... My heart sank. Do I wait and apply grubex in June or go curative again?

Re: Sleepless in Rexford - Scheming
That is not much of an infestation. Check a square foot in the lawn. 10 in a square foot would be an infestation.

If you use Grubex, keep in mind it should be applied in April or May...not June (though June is better than nothing, but don't wait until June if you're using it!). Everyone keeps repeating the wrong timing...even Ace Hardware on their receipts when you buy the product.KnickLeDime wrote: ↑April 22nd, 2019, 6:50 pmToday was edging around a big tree and dug up about 15 grubs... You must mean Merit. But late May?! That sounds very, very early for Merit. They put it down in July here every year...June at the earliest (professional applicators...homeowners can't use it here).KnickLeDime wrote: ↑April 22nd, 2019, 10:11 pmI'm gonna go Marit from site one... PS: I can't keep track of the NY regulations. Is Grubex not allowed but Merit is allowed?
