Quick update, we are 17 days post overseed. The areas that were covered with peat moss have germinated nicely. I didn't cover the entire 30k sqf lawn with peat moss but only the areas that were very thin or areas that were just dirt due to last years grub damage. Those areas have germinated very nicely.
I'm disappointed in the germination rate everywhere else. I tried many spots just checking between established blades of grass and I'm not seeing much. This is with 3 watering a day for the last 10+ days. Almost 60% of the mix I used is KBG, I know that takes longer to germinate so I'm hopeful I get at least some improvement in the germination between established grass that is still thin in spots.
The thought that nags at me is should I have dethatched or something? I didn't rake the entire lawn by hand but I raked probably for about 4 or 5 hours areas that were sparse or had no grass (again, due to lawn not recovering or spreading yet into the badly damaged sections by grubs). My concern is seed to soil contact in those areas that I didn't rake. It's likely to late now but just eyeballing it, some areas of concern have what I would describe almost like a thin layer of thatch or grass that is dead...I wonder if the seeds just didn't make contact with dirt.
I guess I'll keep watching to see if there are any improvements. I'll post some pictures of what I'm talking about tonight.
