Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
Coming along. Weeds are pretty minimal.
Time to think follow up Tenacity spray. I'll probably wait a week given the germination timing.
Here is my seed vs plug experiment. I spaced the little plugs out a good bit using my pro plugged maybe 3 or 4 in on average as you can see. I trim the plugs with the weed whacker occasionally. A little milo here and there.
I plan to compare how it looks around fathers day.

Hey, I like the idea of a croquet / British lawn bowls court. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowls
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

So much rain! The renovation area has some chlorosis. i added some milo yesterday. Waiting for a dry spell to get tenacity down still when the chlorosis subsides. Some crabgrass poking through here and there. Thin in low spots.

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
Got Tenacity down at the 4 oz per acre rate tonight. Been hitting it with a few lbs of milo in the handheld spreader every time I have a few spare minutes, maybe 3 times in 2 weeks????
So, I'll be at 2 months from seed down in a week. This renovation is far behind my fall renovations. I have not done a full irrigation cycle over a month we have had so much rain.
Some crabgrass popping up, but the tenacity should nail it:
Theres no way this new turf will match the established turf by summer, dont force a spring renovation if you think you are going to get it to look consistent this season
My plug experiment. The plug area matches much better!

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
The area has been half submerged under water for at least a week, after consistent rain for as many days.
There is a bit of chlorosis in spots and stunted growth, much like you get when you overwater.
I think I have adequate coverage for leveling work this fall. It doesn't seem to be settling any more.

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
Early July update.
The renovation area went from 60s and 70s with constant rain and pooling water for a month to dry and 90s for 2 weeks with a few light showers.
Its struggling. I'm weaning it off the constant rain with shallower more frequent rain and am back to deep and infrequent here.
I may not cut this area again until mid August to reduce stress.
Crabgrass pressure is heavier as it thrives while the KBG struggles. Tenacity is not a pre emergent. Granted this is a thinner stand than the established adjacent turf, but the weed pressure is obvious.
I'll wait to kill the crabgrass though.

I also concur with you in Tenacity that it’s not anywhere near an absolute PreM for renovations.
My rear yard Spring reno is the same deal. Lot of crabgrass germinated despite having used Tenacity. I’m guessing that all the rain we had this spring is big part of why it wasn’t all that effective.
Currently I’m doing a real world crabgrass test of Tenacity on my rear yard and put it down at 125% rate.

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
Very dry. Low 90s. No end in sight right now.
The young grass is going dormant in spite of watering to keep it going. I just hope I dont lose too much.
I watered an inch early in the week and a half inch several days later. Crabgrass loves this environment. Baby KBG not so much.
the adjacent, mature turf that also had standing water this spring is frying too. Classic example of why watering habits trump almost everything else right now. The standing water really impacted its growth and the sun is killing it. It's even partially shaded.

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
I decided to use Tenacity to blast the crabgrass in my lawn. So far so good lot of white CG and should have it mostly eradicated so on late August with cooler temps the KBG is not competing with it.

Re: HLG's spring 2019 play area renovation
Yeah my tenacity app didnt kill it all, and now it's too hot and stressful to apply herbicide heavily on baby grass.
I'll wait until growth picks up late summer. I'm probably levelling this area anyways.
That topsoil in a bag was loaded with crabgrass seeds.
