I could use some advice on watering. The seedlings are about 10-13 days old at this point. Maybe 3/4 of an inch high.

Right now I am watering enough to keep the soil damp 24/7. I feel like I should start letting the soil dry out a little between watering. Does that make sense?

I am thinking I would run the irrigation system in late morning (11am?) and maybe again around 4pm. It seems like dew in the morning and evening should add enough moisture at the beginning and end of the day.

What do people think?

Today is 18 days since germination. Is it time to fertilize yet?

It isn't a calendar thing - it's all about observing the lawn and determining the state of the germinating seedlings.

Answer these questions:

(1) Are you still getting new seedlings germinating?
(2) Did you put down fertilizer at the time of seeding? If so, when was that?
(3) Did you read all about "Sprout-and-Pout"? Did the growth stop and then resume yet?
(4) Are there any significant issues that came with the germination, or fungal challenges?

Answer these questions:
(1) Are you still getting new seedlings germinating?
Not germinating but there are areas that I had to re-seed where the sprouts are behind. These youngest sprouts probably make up only 90% of the reno however they are front and center in the front yard.

I may reseed these spots again because the germination is very sparse. It was bare soil with no stubble and on a slight slope. So rain has washed them away a few times.

(2) Did you put down fertilizer at the time of seeding? If so, when was that?
I did not put fert down when I seeded. The last fert application was a balanced fertilizer on July 23rd. My soil test recommendation was for a balanced fertilizer for the foreseeable future.

(3) Did you read all about "Sprout-and-Pout"? Did the growth stop and then resume yet?
I have read about sprout and pout. I can not say with any certainty whether growth stopped and then resumed. But I can say that the sprouts now have multiple blades - sometimes 5 or 6. I believe that's "tillering?"

(4) Are there any significant issues that came with the germination, or fungal challenges?
Only issues are some areas that have needed re-seeding due to washout out. Some of those spots may need to be reseeded again.

That doesn't look sparse to me - as it tillers (yes, that's tillering) it will fill. The reseeding was needed I'm sure, but it painted you into a corner. I guess if it is growing and tillering, you could fertilize - it generally doesn't tiller until S&P is done. Just know that the reseeded areas may suffer a bit.

If I were to hold off on the fertilizing until the re-seeded areas are further along - am I giving up development of the more advanced areas? It sounds like fertilizing now would be a trade off. Can you talk about that trade off?

Everything in gardening (including lawns) is a trade-off -- it's the nature of the beast...

I've had renovations that had very-slow germination (all the way to Day 33 for germination occurring) and the grass ("Emblem") fragile as can be for a while. And I've had renovations that roared to life and looked like sod ("Blueberry") by Day 60.

If you wait too long to start fertilizing, there is a chance that you may develop the diseases of slow-growth regimens - especially Rust and Powdery Mildew. Do it too soon and you may stress the grass that is still in single-blade mode and developing its root system. Remember, the idea is to get the grass (all of it!) to mature and harden-off by the end of the growth period in later-October or early November.

There are no hard-and-fast rules -- you observe, make decisions and take the responsibility for the outcome(s). Yup, even when you've gotten yourself into the challenges of grass sections that are at differing stages.

Ive decided to fertilize. If it hurts the areas that are a little younger hopefully the fert will help the older sprouts to spread into those areas.

Question: i have some rust on the existing PR in back. Should i start serenade applications on both the new kbg and existing PR?

Serenade is best as a preventative, not a curative. But I've had luck against Rust as a curative. Rust is an issue in low-growth situations most often, and if it isn't terrible, just getting fertilizer down may fix it.

Serenade is OK to apply at any time.

Hard to believe it showed tillering at 18 days. No sprout and pout That's Awesome!

I am very happy with it. On the S&P I think I may actually have some pouting going on now. It looks good, much denser than I expected at this point but in many areas not really growing vertically.

On a different subject, when can I start spraying foliar iron?

Take it very easy on the Iron. New seedlings can easily turn muddy/blackish.

So, I bought the ingredients for the iron spray about 7-8 years ago. Made it up once and used it on my northern mix lawn in my last house. I didnt see any benefit and never used it again. So fast forward to today and I really have no experience with it.

If I am better off waiting until next year or later in the fall, that's fine. Today is 29 days after germination. I have fertilized once but have not mowed.

Um Yea. I sprayed saturday and say no change until today (monday) and now I have a black tint going on.
