Renovators: Grass Seed Supply Drying Up

Post by andy10917 » June 14th, 2020, 8:31 am

Once again, we're at the point in the grass seed season where suppliers are reporting that they are running out of popular cultivars and that there will be no more entering the supply chain.

I had 3 inquiries this week, all having trouble locating popular cultivars.

What people/members often do not realize is that the grass seed supply is not on a calendar year cycle - the season starts in September and goes through August. If a cultivar's demand exceeds supply, the available amount tends to run out in June/July, leaving those that want to do an August 15th renovation choosing from leftover cultivars.

Remember, grass seed is a living thing, and you can't just fire up the factory to make more - the grass seed growers made the decision about what cultivar to grow last year, and when its gone, it's gone.

If you don't have your supply of grass seed very soon, you'd better start thinking about your second or third favorite cultivars and anticipating some disappointment.

So Andy, do you generally recommend purchasing seed you’ll use in the Fall in early Spring? Thanks.
