Gonna be renovating my daughter and son-in law's lawn this year. they are on about a 20-30 degree slope. Has anyone used an erosion mat that you thought worked particularly well? Thanks.

I know I've seen some reports on the web site in prior lawn renovations which had some success stories of specific erosion mats or seeding blankets or whatever they're called. However, I haven't actually used any my self, being fortunate to have a mostly flat lawn with the exception of a few small lightly sloped areas.

What is the square footage of the area we're talking about? There is no erosion mat that is reasonable cost for a half-acre+ lawn.

Between 3500 - 4000 Sq ft. The one I saw online is made by a company called curlex? It comes in two sizes: 4 or 8 x 112.5 ft rolls. Alternatively, I'm thinking of leaving the eventually dead existing 25% grass and 75% weeds maybe an inch tall and just spreading about a quarter inch of topsoil as the seedbed. That perhaps would create its own natural erosion mat with the dead debris still anchored into the ground?

i bought the 4 x112.5 ft roll. it is made from aspen wood fibers. i have had success with that particular mat in the past. This year I am doing about 3500 sq feet out of the 3/4 acre over the next few years. I plan on buying enough rolls for the job. I am not sure peat moss is practical for the amount of renovation I am doing. Trying to spread that amount of peat moss seems daunting.

For my yard renovation, I am having a guy come out and do hydro seed (without the seed). It has a tacifier in it to help with the erosion. Price wise it wasn't too bad - $200/truck and I will need 2 trucks (~9000 sq ft total). Just another idea for you since you would only need one truck probably.

I look forward to doing this sort of thing someday for my 22 and 24 YO kids. It does put a little pressure on your son in law though. Hopefully he has bought in to the lawn nut approach to lawn care.

that sounds like a good idea. Have you researched hydroseeding? There are a couple companies here that do it, but I want to use my own seed (like you). I wasn't sure if it was gimmicky or not? However, for larger renovations, it sure would be more productive than spreading peat moss, or unraveling a seed blanket.

I would want to make sure that the hydro seed truck doesn't have any seed in it from a previous job. That's a good idea though.
