Are my original plans for resseding done for?

Post by bybcous » August 20th, 2020, 8:01 pm

I was preparing to reseed my lawn and start getting it in shape around September 10. I have been away 2 years, im in military and weeds have taken over my entire lawn. Originally it was fescue lawn, but now has bermuda grass and fescue mixed throughout the lawn. I have been applying 2 applications of tenacity at 0.5 tsp fpr 2000 sq ft as it was my first times ever mixing herbicides and wanted to be safe. I do not want bermuda in my lawn, but its everywhere and i can see the runners everywhere as well. Attached are pictures of my front yard and backyard today 17 days after tenacity application.
Is it possible to get rid of bermuda and atillbe able to reseed with tall fescue this fall. i did not have time for a soil test as i just got back.

Aftached are pictures from my security cameras The large dirt pile by shed has never been able to grow grass since we purchased the house.

Alright, I think you're not getting answers for a reason - I've read the posting several times, and I remain confused about what you're doing with herbicides, and where you hope to take this...

What exactly are you trying to do with the applications of Tenacity? You mentioned that you have "weeds" and then went on to concentrate on discussing Bermuda. Are the "weeds" just the Bermuda, or do you have a plethora of other (broadleaf?) weeds?

Tenacity is a good product, but it is not a cure-all by any means. It is generally used to control some weeds that are not controlled well by more "general-use" herbicides. In the Triangle Approach regimen, it is a "Level 3" product - a specialist tool. It may indicate that it is not to be used on Bermudagrass lawns, but that doesn't mean that it is a good herbicide for Bermudagrass control. In short, it sucks as a Bermudagrass control when used alone, and makes no labelled claim to do so. It's excellent at making Bermudagrass ugly without finishing the kill.

In combination with Fenoxaprop ("Acclaim Extra") and Triclopyr, several members have said that the cocktail of Acclaim Extra, Tenacity and Triclopyr can suppress Bermudagrass, but that it can take 3 applications per year, for several years to take "suppression" all the way to "control".

If you're using Tenacity instead for broadleaf control, there are cheaper and more broad-spectrum herbicides for that. Tenacity is strange in that it can control some weeds that almost nothing else controls, but leave some simple, easy-to-control weeds unaffected.

Now, to the main question (and posting title) - can you get this all done and still reseed by mid-September? That's probably unlikely - you have to look up the minimum time for reseeding after each one of the "cocktail" ingredients, after the weed/Bermuda work is finished, and still have enough time for the reseeded grass to harden-off for Winter. That's quite an ask, when you're basically starting on August 21st.

I'd think seriously about changing my agenda - maybe control broadleaf weeds, put a good initial dent in the Bermuda, and get the soil ready for going to a nice lawn. In 2021, you can chart an effort to do a Fall reseeding, or if you're very brave, try a Spring reseed. Remember, when the grass seed goes down, you'll have to stop the slathering of herbicides until the grass matures some. You can't do it all at the same time - it's a marathon and not a Sprint.
