New house

Hey guys

Thanks to you (and Logan Labs) my lawn was beyond words.

Then I move to a new city, new house and now my first reno.

As of tonight I’ve got her scalped and my second app of roundup. Seed down is for Aug 10.
90/10 tall fescue (hogans) and kbg (award, jackpot, midnight).
The move and life in general has been too busy. Soil test has not happened and I have noticed sporadic moss throughout the 2000sqft area.
Drainage is fine, mature maple and basswood covering 1/3 of area with sun passing beyond them around 1pm.

Should I get the soil test done in anticipation for the fall?
Should I do a FAS app to address the moss, rake it out or leave it?

I’m 1 hour west of Toronto. Would rather be in FL or TX as it feels like a brave new world up here. :mod:

Thanks

There is no reason to avoid testing, although we'll take into account that some items will not be used at seeding time. Contact Logan Labs to see if you need an import form to send the samples for testing.

Research using Dawn dishwashing solution to control moss - moss can keep seed from coming into direct contact with the soil, and that means less germination.

soil test mailed today.

I did a second app of roundup July 18 and a Dawn moss app July 19.
Plan is for seed down Aug 10.

The forum's reno guide says roundup is applied once, then again a week later then seed down in another week.

Am I fine waiting 2 weeks after the second roundup to apply seed? (maybe just spray anything that breaks through in the meantime)
and is there a safety threshhold when spraying Dawn too close to seeding?

You're fine waiting 2 weeks after the second Round Up. I actually spot-applied Round Up the day I seeded. Round Up doesn't have any impact on seed--it only kills plants that are actively growing. By the time the seed starts to grow, the Round Up has washed to the soil surface and bound quite strongly to it. It's inactive.

Dawn can also be applied right up to, including, or after seeding. It'll actually help the seeding process a little bit by making the water "wetter" and I've been known to use a bit when damping down seed. Even huge amounts aren't a problem as they'll wash out of the surface layer very quickly, long before the saltiness (soap being a sodium or potassium salt of a fatty acid or, in this case, a surfactant) can be any major issue.

Grass seed is really pretty forgiving stuff and neither Dawn nor Round Up are particularly harsh on it.
