DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - 2022 Front Yard
Hello everyone. Hope all is going well! Sunday I kicked off the fall season and my sixth installment of converting our lot into real turf. It started back in March actually when I started the search to secure seed, mark off the plan on the calendar for killing off the existing front lawn, etc.
The area is 24,050 sq ft. It was a cornfield when we built, and after the construction of our house was complete, just weeds growing in. This spring our front was solid yellow from all of the dandelions and I kept telling my wife “don’t worry, August will get here soon enough.” It was painful to see each morning. I started the kill process in July; sprayed it with Glypho 3 separate times.
We had some really rough spots and a lot of settling from drain lines and the electric line underground. I had a crew bring in top soil to get those areas leveled out. This past Saturday my wife, myself and my Dad sowed seed and spread straw on 6k sq ft. Sunday I had a crew of 9 family members come out to help complete the remaining 18k sq ft. We started at 6AM and were done right before 9AM. After a small break my wife and I went out and setup the sprinkler system. We have 10 heads, and I’m pleasantly surprised the coverage we have.
I’m counting Sunday August 28th as my ‘Day 0’ and seed down date. Yesterday starting around 8PM we got several rounds of showers, but no washout!! It was damp this morning and then the sun came out right after noon, so I turned the sprinklers back on for this evening. The long term forecast looks favorable for the next week.
Best of luck to everyone tackling a reno this fall. I’ll post pictures and keep updates coming as I can. Run down of steps taken:
-Sprayed Round up (x3 times)
-Scalped as low as riding mower would go
-Used lawn sweeper to collect as much dead clippings I could (several carts collected)
-Took a few hours when ground was bare and setup/mapped the hoses and sprinkler head locations (farmer stopped and asked “Certainly you’re not watering dead grass??” )
-Aerated a section close to the house that was extremely compacted
-Top soil spread on low spots
-Tenacity app
-Starter Fertilizer Applied
-Seed Down
-Straw Spread
-Water system setup
Seed and straw down!
Few days after initial glyphosate application:
After third round of glyphosate:

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 8
Labor Day update.
Whew, we’ve had a wet weather pattern all weekend long. Early Saturday morning it rained a good 3 hours straight. Fortunately it wasn’t a hard rain.
This morning we received 1.5” of rain in about 2 hours. I had standing puddles in spots. The rain stopped, the water retreated. I’ve had the sprinklers off since Friday.
There’s noticeable green patches, hard to take those pics with my phone, and more germination popping up.

Woke up to unexpected rain. Had to run outside and turn sprinkler system off. It’s a renovator’s dream….not too hard and not too light.

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 17
Things are still spreading in. Weed pressure in the 12k sq ft area where we had crummy straw. I’ll have to hit that later with Tenacity. In the past we’ve had weeds from straw but by the following Memorial Day they’re taken care of. It was 67 here yesterday and I only ran the sprinklers one time. They’re still off as it’s cool today. The heat is returning and it’s supposed to be dry so they’ll be back on soon.
I am anticipating mowing around day 28-30.

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 24
I’ve been watering twice daily as of late. This afternoon I took the push mower and bagger out and mowed off 12k sq ft. This half of the project was covered with straw that was still wet and had a lot of seeds. Thus more weeds. I don’t want the weeds outcompeting the grass seedlings so I mowed it at 3.25”. I took all the clippings across the road and threw them into the cornfield.

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 27 Full Mow
I’ve been away a few days. Got home mid afternoon. The reno needed mowed. I mowed the rest of the yard first. Took the zero turn and scraped clean the deck, then sharpened the blades. It took a bit to clear the hoses and sprinklers off, but I freed everything.
Mowed at 3.5”. Things look okay. That damn 12k area closest to the road is chock full of weeds. I’ll spray tenacity in a couple weeks or so.
Lots of weeds in here:

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 33
I had the day off so I removed all of the hoses and mowed. I again scraped the deck and cleaned out any debris from past mows. I’ve watered at least once a day for the past week or so, it’s been extremely dry as of late albeit the temps have dropped.
I was hoping we’d get remnants of Ian tomorrow but now even that looks to be a pipe dream.
