2015 Tomatoes
I will NOT lay down and die. I don't care if it's snowing, in March, in Arkansas. I am starting tomatoes tomorrow.
Thanks to our good friend GaryC, I picked up some Black Krim and Mortgage Lifter seeds. First time for those and I'm pretty excited.
Also going to do the standard Big Boy and Better Boy Hybrids.
Last year I grew some Red Currant cherry tomatoes and those things exploded. Probably 20+ tiny grape size tomatoes every day for most of the season. Those are definitely happening again this year.
Brandywine, Beefsteak, and Rutgers in the heirloom department, too.
The Sweet Snack Hybrids are a little big for my cherry tomato taste, but are just right for fried green tomatoes. Those will get the nod, as well.
Those Quarter Century tomatoes didn't do well for me last year. But they make such a beautiful stocky plant it makes me want to give them another shot to see if the produce better. In the end I want tomatoes. Not pretty plants.
The Bloody Butchers produced good early, but took a dump at the midway point in the season and we're just taking up space. They may get the not for early tomatoes, but in an area of the garden where they won't take space from something that produces better.
So that's what's going to be in my tomato aisle. What are you guys planting?

And so it is written.....
34 plants. 14 for me, 10 for a friend, 8 for my father in law, and 2 for my mom.

Re: 2015 Tomatoes
Im gunna do some this year, despite my tiny little yard. I was totally eyeballing the mortgage lifter. It's too cold in the basement to start seeds, I'm considering the top of the fridge. I've never done seeds or veggies before. I also want to grow edamame.

Re: 2015 Tomatoes
2/3 good. 1/3 bad.
The big boys and better boys FROZE. I don't know if this is the tomato version of sprout and pout, or what.
I also learned I need better lights. I change bulbs every year, but these t8's just don't cut it. I think that's got to be why they're so tall.
Anyway. Gave them a light feeding, and put them outside since its warmed up. Should fix my problems. I hope.
Please excuse the grass clipping. I scalped the bermuda right next to them before I realized I was powdering them with clippings.

Re: 2015 Tomatoes
Missed this.
I put in 3 "San marzano" 1 sweet 100, a brandy wine and a beef steak. I don't mess with seeds yet, just starts from my local nursery.

I only mess with seeds out of pure winter boredom. Not because I'm a tomato snob.ckone wrote:Missed this.

It is fun though. When it works. Right now, the rough start they're off to is a little frustrating.
Thankfully Bonnie plants still knows how to grow them if mine fail
They're tough though. I'm sure they're fine. Heat and real sun will do them wonders.

Re: 2015 Tomatoes
My wife does the same. Last year we had an indoor greenhouse that kept it moist and warm. This year she posted photos of her seeds sprouted so her dad decided to do the same.. but it seems he planted the cucumber seeds instead lol
