best soil combination for growing hot peppers

Post by Ron Burgundy » July 21st, 2015, 5:22 pm

I just built a raised garden for the purpose of growing hot peppers, and maybe a tomato plant. What would be the best soil combination? I've heard that 1/3 peet moss, 1/3 composted manure, and 1/3 sand is a good mix.

Personally, I think peppers and tomatoes are easy. I've done it potted with generic garden soil from the store and just straight into the ground with no soil test and both ways I grew more peppers and tomatoes than our family could eat. If you are looking to grow award-winning plants, then I'll leave the recommendations to someone else.

Not really looking for award quality. Just some good quality soil that won't break the bank. I have about 40 sq ft to fill. Looks like about $100 to fill it.

I've used 100% compost with great results. Recent harvest.

Very nice. Do you buy the compost by the yard or do you get the bags from a big box store?

Big box store garden soil, top soil, compost grown. Carolina Reapers are finally coming in. Got a late start due to 3 weeks constant rain in late April/early May. EDIT: to add, I'm not sure why those green peppers came out purple  They all came out of the same seed pack? But they produced 2 dozen fruits so far and there are 6 more on there now. The fruits are getting smaller each time. I've never had a pepper plant produce so many peppers before. It's unreal :amen:
