bottom end rot

Post by shoalducker » July 13th, 2011, 7:10 am

some of my tomatoes seem to turn red rather quickly and the few that do the ends have rotten out. come to find out this is a common problem due to watering issues/calcium deff. i water regularly each morning, so its not lack of, or irregular watering. i am buying into a calcium deff. the soil is contained in raised beds. i doubt i can get a quick return on a soil test at this point, but plan to for next year. is there a quick fix, like a liquid calcium product? any advice, i hate wasting my hard work. the whole garden was started from seed.

Check out texasweed's tips here. The secret planting mix has some provisions for calcium.

TW has it down pat. I used his method for the first time this year so far so good on the Rutgers/ Brandywine. I will say that BER can occur more often in some varieties then others, like Romas.

I have the same issue with my tomatoes. Only difference is I don't water every morning. I started out watering at 4PM. Then switched to 10AM and not everyday. Just last week, I noticed several tomatoes with BER. I have added crushed egg shells and I pulverized some kale in the blender and water the plant with that.

I don't know yet if this has worked. I just read texasweed's post and maybe I'll crush a couple of calcuim tabs (after the fact but worth a try)

Don't forget the epsom salt with calcium, it helps the plant absorb the calcium. I use a prob in the soil like a dipstick, if it seems dry then water. Too much water will cause rot.
