Online tree order?
Anyone have recommendations or experience on where to purchase a male Ginkgo tree online with happy results (wishing to purchase (1) ~6-8 ft tree)? I am living in southeast Virginia area and none of the local nurseries plan to carry them anytime soon. Thanks!

Custom Order
Maybe you've already asked, but will one of the local nurseries not order it for you? I'd go that route before mail order.

I don't know anything about those types of trees but I buy all our trees from Stark Brothers.

Stark brothers is a great site. I buy all my fruit trees from them. I don't believe they sell ginko trees but if they do it would just be a bare root whip, not a 6-8' b&b tree. I don't think you will be able to mail order a b&b treetlinden wrote:I don't know anything about those types of trees but I buy all our trees from Stark Brothers.

Re: Online tree order?
Excellent choice! Ginkgos are my favorite. Unfortunately, after having moved, we're now down to only one small Tschi-Tschi that we took with us.
Ginkgos are slow growers, so definitely start with something at least 6-8' if budget allows. Look for potted over balled if possible. It's not at all critical (my largest was balled), but if balled recently, it may take a couple years to get going again...which ours did. I've priced ginkgos online many times, but they's always been small.
I would continue your search for a nursery that can help you out.

Re: Online tree order?
Thanks all for your replies. Unfortunately I have called all local nurseries and asked if I could order from them but no dice, hence the question about purchasing online from a reputable seller...I guess I will continue the search! We are also in search of a dwarf tree (max 6ft) of some sort we can plant in our flower bed as a focal point....about 10 ft from the house .

Re: Online tree order?
I know there is a shortage of nursery stock due to the recession in 2007-2008. My understanding was this was mostly affecting the 2-3" caliper trees. Ginkos are great trees and on my list to plant on my property.

There are many stunning Japanese maples that stay really small. Of course, the smaller they are, the slower they grow, so you'll be even more motivated to spend the money on a larger specimen.Main_sail22 wrote:We are also in search of a dwarf tree (max 6ft) of some sort we can plant in our flower bed as a focal point....about 10 ft from the house.

I looked at Ginkgo Bilobas early on. I think I need to revisit them again.

Between those and a specific variety of Shantung Maple is what I am after...and no one carries them or will order them. As they say, we want what we can't have haha.

Re: Online tree order?
Have you tried any wholesale nursery's?? Up here we have northern nursery and milicans, they don't sell to public, but if you could find the tree I am sure you could find someone to buy it for you.

Re: Online tree order?
Lone Ranger, I was looking for a few: Super Dragon Maple, Beni Kawa, Paperbark Maple, or maybe a Fireglow. My ideal tree is a Katsura tree...love the colors, shape, everything....but I have a small back yard and don't think I can support anything that's over 18ft or a ~12 ft wide spread. Ideal height would be 10-15 ft tall and 8-10 ft wide.

Re: Online tree order?
Excellent taste in trees. I'm starting again with a young Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple) after leaving one behind at our last house. And I've been hunting for a Katsura for a few years now. Sadly, we had our mind set on a weeping Katsura when our reliable nursery actually stocked standard Katsuras. Now we have a location that would be better suited for a standard Katsura, and even that nursery doesn't stock them anymore. The reason? Apparently no one knows what a Katsura is, so no one was buying. Damn shame. Gorgeous trees.

I'm looking at Acer Griseum hybrids, also.

I did not need to know that there was such as thing as an Acer griseum hybrid (actually marketed, that is). The wish list just got longer.

Re: Online tree order?
Nowadays, trees are like elite KBG. There are so many cultivars that are hybrids of the old standbys. Magnolias are a very interesting trek.

Re: Online tree order?
I do enjoy a properly maintained magnolia, but they simply get way to big for the area I need to plant a tree in.

Re: Online tree order?
Hmm. It must be a southern thing. Around here the only magnolia that gets to a large tree size is the Galaxy.

I agree it is a southern thing. I believe the climate is more suitable for extended growth. Speaks of magnolia's....(Magnolia Lane)...I'm rooting for my man Jordan Spieth to clinch the Masters again, back to back.
