Trimming a Monterrey Oak.

Post by Yossarian » April 12th, 2016, 8:30 pm

I have some small(ish) oaks in my front that were planted by the builder. I want to encourage the trees to grow up and not be squat and bushy. Is it okay to trim some of the bottom branches to encourage this growth? Take a look at my recent post in the warm season lawn pics thread to see what the trees look like.

The genetics of the oak will decide it's natural shape. Trimming the bottom of the canopy for clearance is not the same as shaping. I would advise speaking with an arborist. There is a correlation of branching to rooting. Do it wrong and you may do serious harm. I've seen a few homeowners in this area damage there trees, even death, from improper limbing.
