Weird Bug in Maple Tree

Post by gsweater » April 30th, 2016, 5:06 pm

I spotted a few branches with these critters on the ends of the branches. Some had several egg clutches that had hatched. I don't know what they are and cut off all affected areas. These were all on the lower branches and the branches which they were on had no leaves at the outer end of the branch, it appeared as though the buds had formed but never opened. Any ideas what it is?

If you saved one you could take it into your local county extension center, if you have one, and they may be able to identify it.

We had drugstore beetles when we first moved into our house and they identified those stating they were attracted to pet food. I demolished the kitchen and found a big, rolled up ball of wet dog food.

These look more like armor bugs than beetles to me, which would make sense since they mostly feed on plant tissue. But that's a tough one.

Terrifying bug has been identified! Apparently, regardless of it's looks, it relatively harmless.
