Yes, I know it's allelopathy, but you think I want to type that twice? I'm wondering if anybody knows if pin oaks are...that...
I've tried two sets of Melampodium under my pin oak. I assumed the first was frost-damaged, as the other three plants looked similarly bad. This time, no--the weather has been just fine, and the other four (I saved one) Melampodium look great. The ones under the pin oak are dead. They're damp, just like the rest of the garden. Lightly fed. And dead.
Now that I think of it, grass incursion into that particular mound of mulch doesn't happen much. However, I have no trouble with the crocus, tulip, and hyacinth bulbs there.
I'm going to try common zinnia and see if that works (plus I wasn't planning another trip to New Jersey where I got the Melampodium, and don't want to make a special trip just for those few plants). If this fails, I'll leave the area blank.
