I have had good results with miracle grow evergreen tree spikes with my arborvitae's...I have 15 green giants and 6 emerald arborvitae's around my house. The 15 really struggled when initially planted for the first year, after that they took off! Spider mites are one of my main concerns now! Take it FWIW as I am just a beginner at this. Good luck!

I put down a few bags the other day, but it doesnt really explain why some are doing well and others arent

I would do a paper test for mites. Often times that's the issue.
