Sienna Glen Maple changing colors, leaf spots

Post by micvog » July 2nd, 2016, 12:14 pm

A neighbor has a Sienna Glen maple in his backyard (planted last year) that is changing colors and the leaves have brown spots on them. He is concerned there is something wrong. Any thoughts? Pic below...

Apparently following ST6 recommendations for your lawn makes you the neighborhood green thumb.

Orange/Red is its Fall coloration. Showing Fall colors far too early can be a sign of stress in Maples. I don't know what diseases Maples get in Wisconsin, but if that tree were in the Northeast, I'd be thinking Tar Spot disease. Typically, Tar Spot is cosmetic and doesn't significantly harm or kill trees, but it's ugly. I'd tell the neighbor to talk to the local co-op extension - they'll know if there were conditions this year that favor it and can advise on removal/disposal of any fallen leaves as the season wears on. That prevents the disease from becoming a recurring thing. Whether the disease and the color change are related or just both signs of stress, I dunno.
