Oak ID of sapling

Post by Gags » July 17th, 2016, 11:55 pm

Before I post a "free to good home" msg to my neighborhood listserv, wanted to verify the species. I'm thinking red oak?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Definitely red oak. Id'ing based on 1 leaf is hard, don't think its northern red. I'm going to guess Scarlet oak. My other guesses would be Shumard or Pin oak.

Thanks for the possible options. I will dig out my ID books and keep researching.

I'm guessing the key will be the non-symmetrical lobes (terminology?) - will post again when I've confirmed.

Thanks again,

Better image of sapling. Still haven't dug out the books yet - probably a red oak, but there's just enough variation in each leaf to make me question myself.

It's in the red oak family, but with that deep lobing, I agree that it's not a red oak. Could be scarlet oak or black oak. Heck, It could be a pin oak.

To affirm what others have said, you can always tell a red oak because they always have a bristle at the tip of each lobe.

Your leaf base is not truncate so that would rule out Shumard and typically rules out Scarlet oak.
However there are scarlet oak with rounded or tapered leaf bases.
Looks like it might have too many lobes to be a pin oak.. but there are pin oak leaves with that many lobes.
The veins are alternate which is more common in the Scarlet Oak.
So anyway...
It is either Scarlet, Pin, or Nuttal oak.
A great tree either way! Nuttal would be my preference.
