Recommendation plant for garden against house/by door

Post by nhyrum » August 31st, 2016, 9:44 pm

We really got a house, and has this empty spot that is a quarter oval, about 3 feet by 6 feet, with the long end against the house.

I want some shrub/small tree to put there.

We live in central Wyoming, the front of the house facing east. From what I've gathered, low pants, with smaller leaves do better in the windy conditions we have here.

I'd like to go to one of our local nurseries, but everything here (other than Walmart and fast food) closes at 5 and on the weekends, and well... I work Monday through Friday 8-5... Making it difficult to get to them before they close... (city of 13k)

I would love to have a Rhodie(grew up in Seattle) but... I don't think it would make it even if I left a hose running on it 24/7/365.

Japanese maple? Or is that not enough room?

I can take a picture of the plot if it would help.

A picture of the area would be helpful but I don't think it's big enough for a Japanese maple.

I think you would be better off looking at shrubs than trees. Boxwoods and Barberry's are nice.

OK. I like the barberry. I just kinda hate the green puff ball shrubs. I want some color

Plant some marigolds. They should at least bloom for a while.

Here's a picture of the plot. I had the long side backwards, it's up against the walk way

nyrhum, I did a quick Google search and didn't find a Nursery and Landscape Association for the great state of Wyoming. Most states have one, and they usually publish a book about what grows best for a particular state. The best link I could find was here: http://www.plantnative.org/rpl-mtwy.htm .
Your climate would be the deciding factor for what would be appropriate. Good Luck!

What about a sky pencil holly in the corner, and then put some of the plastic planter containers around the arc, and leave them in the ground. This will allow you to swap out some cheap annuals throughout the season without any digging. Just remove the old plant/container and drop a new plant/container inside the in-ground containers. You can have one look for spring, another for summer, and another in fall, giving you year round color.

Ooh! I like that sky holly! Does it have to be banded? I could see something like that getting destroyed by the 45+ mph wind here

45+mph winds! Sheesh! How about snow? Do you get any? Just curious.
