Can I transplant an Azalea?

Post by bncop25 » November 1st, 2016, 11:47 pm

Could I transplant a mature azalea? My neighbor wants to get rid of it. It's about 5' tall. I would pull it out with a come-a-long and transplant it in my yard if it had a decent chance at survival. Im thinking any attempt at this will wait until next fall. I'd probably want to feed it something along with water, right? Anyone with experience on this?

Pulling out with a come-a-long is where you'll fail. Either dig an appropriate root ball (should be fairly shallow rooted) or pass on the opportunity.

If it's an evergreen azalea, wait until spring. If it's deciduous, fall is a good time. Chances of success will be greatly improved if you root prune 6–12 months prior. Read up on root pruning and transplanting of mature shrubs. For example: http://extension.psu.edu/plants/gardeni ... -landscape

Sure. I've transplanted them without any issues. Frankly, I think Fall is the best time to do it. It gives the plant more time to reestablish before facing summer heat.

transplant away! root pruning is a good idea but not necessary if you get enough of the root ball and keep it somewhat watered well the first year
