Need Tree Suggestions

Post by Casutherland » February 27th, 2017, 11:55 am

Hey guys,

Our front yard is fairly small, and we are looking for something that will grow about 10-12 feet and fairly tight. Do you guys have any suggestions?

We are also looking for something for our backyard as well that will grow only about 8-10 feet and not too wide that we can plant in our mulch beds around our deck.

I needs to be something that will do ok in the transition zone. We get down to the 20s in the Winter and as hot as 100 in the summer.

Thanks everyone!

You might be looking at large shrubs grown as trees.

Thanks man. I thought about that too. Maybe some Arbor Vitae's, but we would prefer something with color and beauty like a Japanese Maple or something along those lines.

Pictures of the areas you're talking about would be beneficial. It's hard for people to recommend something without seeing what you're dealing with.

Rising Sun Redbud

There are many small Japanese Maple options. Look into full moon maples (Acer shirasawanum). Or an Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira'.

From the pictures above, I'd go with tall shrubs like arborvitaes. It'll give you some privacy from your neighbors as well. If you wanted some color, you could plant a Japanese maple or crepe myrtle on the corner.

Pick some colorful shrubs, grow them high, and prune them like trees.

My favorites that might look good in that area are- mops cypress, globe blue spruce. weeping canadian hemlock or weeping norway spruce. A mix of those provides nice color range year round.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I really like those suggestions mitten. Going to get a mixture of those, and some plants that flower as well for color.

Well, now I am possibly debating on a hosta garden too...maybe I can mix in some hostas, with the tree/shrubs, and flowers. I just know that area gets morning/evening shade, with afternoon sun.

For the space requirements, I'd recommend going with an upright Japanese maple. They provide beautiful year round interest.
