Help Identify Tree - Plus How to Care for It?
Hey guys,
This tree was planted in the front yard of my house by the builders. It has grown some, but I don't feel I to be super healthy. I want to push it some to grow more. Also, it appears to have a slight lean. Do I need to stake it?
Please help me identify this tree, and what I need to do to push growth on it quicker.

put at least 3-4 inch thick of mulch but make sure mulch doesn't touch the trunk. Get rid of those annuals around it or transplant them. I never took care of my norway maple tree. However since your maple is young, maybe do a deep watering once a week then reduce.

looks like it's too close to your house. Looks like it's only 12ft from the wall of your house and they do get big. Though it's always a personal preference. My maple is 10-12 years old now and diameter is about 12-14ft. You'll definitely have a shade on the pathway.
Check this norway maple, it's friggin huge. This could be 40-50yrs old

Unfortunately, the road is only about 20 ft from my house. So I really can't move it much further. I was not blessed with a large yard. My backyard is slightly bigger. Easy to maintain, but hard to stripe lol.s1mpl3k1d wrote: ↑April 28th, 2017, 2:25 amlooks like it's too close to your house. Looks like it's only 12ft from the wall of your house and they do get big. Anyway, I will remove the annuals and start to water it more. Any fert or anything else to boost growth? Should I put down stakes to prevent it from leaning?

Given the lot/lawn size, a Norway Maple (I'm not sure that it is - the leaf shape is slightly similar but not a match for mine) isn't a great match for the spot. My Norway Maple is ~125 years old, 60'-70' tall with a 75' wide canopy. To give you an idea of its size, the tree is nicknamed "Bertha".

Hmm, well I kept it mostly because it was free with the house. If its a Norway Maple, I will probably need to replace it. Any suggestions moving forward?andy10917 wrote: ↑April 28th, 2017, 9:33 amGiven the lot/lawn size, a Norway Maple (I'm not sure that it is - the leaf shape is slightly similar but not a match for mine) isn't a great match for the spot. Should I send a leaf sample off to the local University of Tennessee Ag Center?

It certainly looks like a Maple, take a mature leaf and compare it to different maple types. Also, what types are popular in your area? There's a lot of Red/Silver maple cross breeds (Autumn Blaze, October Glory, etc.) so if it looks like a Red or Silver Maple, then it's probably one of those but I wouldn't expect to find the specific cultivar.

The lean should fix itself with proper structural training, and the primary leader is already traveling straight up. Once the trunk is a foot thick, that couple of inches left or right won't make a bit of difference.

Good deal! I think it may be a silver maple, but I will do a little further research.rtomek wrote: ↑April 28th, 2017, 2:46 pmIt certainly looks like a Maple, take a mature leaf and compare it to different maple types. I was worried it may not straight up.
