Tree bark fell off
I have a maple (Autumn Blaze) that has some bark damage - not sure what caused it. Do I need to do anything about this, or is there anything I can do?
You can see in the picture not only is there damage, but a new branch sprouted this year that is low to the ground that I will want to trim off. Is there a recommended best time to do that?
Thanks!
Rob

Which way is south? And is the trunk cracked vertically extending beyond the top of the photo?

The damage is on the southwest side of the tree - the black fence is north. I’ll have to take a closer look tomorrow above what is pictured.

Sunscald, Southwest Injury
https://ag.purdue.edu/hla/Extension/nle ... 0Trees.pdf

etc.
Start reading up on it to determine the likelihood of the tree surviving with such substantial damage and what you may do about.
As for the lower sprouts, just prune them now. I pruned a couple today on an 'Autumn Blaze'. You don't want to prune maples in spring because of the free flowing sap (think maple syrup).

I tend to start over when that degree of sunscald damage happens. I wrapped a number of trunks with white fabric tape this last winter.

Thank you very much for that information. It would be a bummer to lose the tree, but if we have to start over with a new one then so be it.
