Trimming a young maple tree?

Post by southern-ct-4 » June 30th, 2020, 4:04 pm

Should I be doing anything with a 5-7 year old Maple tree in terms of pruning/cutting off lower branches, to force that growth higher (or something along those lines)? I vaguely remember the installers saying something like this years ago but I'm not really sure.

The pic below isn't great, but gives an idea of the size, and all of the growth near the bottom.

Thanks!

You can if you wish, and I have with any number of trees of any number of species. Or, if you prefer the weepy look, leave it.

For street trees and ones I need to mow under, I raise the canopy to a point where I can easily walk beneath them. For garden shrubs/trees where the trimming is optional, I tend to go for the weepy look as I like coverage to the ground. And for the evergreens, I let them go to the ground (you actually can raise the canopy on those too if you want--I just don't want).
