Training Branches - time?

Post by PSU4ME » April 9th, 2021, 1:04 pm

I have some peach tree limbs tied to stakes to help pull them down and widen the center out a bit.

Any sort of ballpark timeline where you’d think they be good to untie them? Better to do it when they are growing? They still have some pretty good resistance.

They are about 4 years old. Still relatively young and the branch thickness is about 1.5” diameter

Once the branches are 'set', they won't be pulling against the stakes to return to their former position. Check the branches from time to time to see if they are still trying to spring up. Push down on them a little.

I haven't had a ton of luck training Peach trees to follow a desired shape. I use selective trimming, but it must be repeated almost every year - the tree keeps trying to return to its preferred shape, not mine.

I prune them pretty heavy each year and they like it. Through that I get a lot of the shape I want, just been trying to open this one tree up more but man is it resistant. Obviously doing the open vase style.

Going to spray today so I’ll test the resistance.
