Feeding Arborvitaes?
We planted a few 4' tall arborvitaes around our patio in the beginning of May and while they are doing just fine with regular watering, I would still like to feed them. Question is, what is the best product to do so with? I will be trimming them once they reach about 6-7' tall but I'd like to speed up the process by fertilizing. Any suggestions?

Re: Feeding Arborvitaes?
In July? Organics only on new plants, and don't expect much growth the first year or so. Mine particularly like kelp extract like we use in the BL Kelp Help.
Next year in spring you can use Miracle Gro or a good synthetic on them. Growth still won't be any great shakes, that usually takes to year three.
Roughly, mine grew:
Year 1: 2' to start, 2 1/2' by the end of the season
Year 2: 6' tall
Year 3: 9' and still going (and it's only July)
My ultimate target is about 20 feet, so I'm still feeding heavily. I'll cut that off in mid-August to give the new growth plenty of time to harden before frost.

My backyard is a natural border of Arb's. Spring and or fall use Hollytone on them. you gently dig up a circle, add hollytone then cover with teh dirt and water in

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I'll focus on keeping them watered this year and begin the feeding next spring. Sounds like they'll be right where I want them around this time next year and I can maintain from there.

Digging up an old thread: have about 20 AV Green Giants about 3 years old & upto 20' Ft tall now & 6 AV Emerald Greens ranging from 4-6' tall in their 2 or 3rd year.
Can I use Hollytone on them all or are there better alternatives?

My 3 years old AV plantings have grown in size from ~ 8-9' to over 15' each in their 3rd year.Atc4usmc wrote:I use miracle grow evergreen stakes with good results!
I think it worked....
I've used those MG stakes in their first year in the ground but really can't tell if they did anything $21 for 2 boxes.
Last year, we used Milorganite - which were about $13 for one bag.
This year, I just laid down Hollytone - used 1.5 bags- kinda pricey ~$26/bag.
Guess I might got back to the stakes next year.
Thanks for the feedback.
