Pruning Vs. Shearing

I like the privacy hedge sheared nice, tight and square
Alot of my other shrubs, I prefer the shaggy look and just prune of the really extra long ones that poke out and give it a thinning from the interior every now and then to let sunlight in.
I think this year, just to switch things up, I might go to town, with shear all of them nice and tight. Square, round balls. I know this will also change the current growth on them as it will just promote a very thick edge on the regrowth.
Be curious what camp you guys are in.....maybe it's just me, but I have preferred the more naturalistic shaggy look
