I planted some this year too. They look great with no sign of disease so far. My only regret is that I didn't buy more.

Clipper - looks good.

am I a fool for potting them? water - wise, they are high maintenance from my experience.

Guys, were these regular impatiens wallerina or "Sunpatiens"? The latter are downy mildew resistant, the former are the old ones.
