Hosta questions

Post by fastboat » August 19th, 2015, 6:28 pm

Hi
Looking into splitting these this August based on what I've read here (thanks Andy!)
I've been watering heavily for the last three weeks since this leaf edge problem first showed, and I fertilized with a bit of Milo and then Garden-Tone but it isn't turning around. I'm curious if this is actually the end of season die- off starting a little early due to lack of sufficient watering. If so, can I still do the splits or should I not do that at this stage? It will not bother me in the least to not split them. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The first and third pictures aren't "edge problems" -- that looks like sun scortch. Where are these hostas?

I agree. Looks like a heavy dose of afternoon sun.
I don't think it's going to bother them if you split them.

Thanks guys. They are on the North side under about a 24 inch overhang. They get a little direct sun early and very late. Have not seen this in other years and they have been there at least 6 or so. Maybe the dryness made them
more susceptible this year?

Probably. Hosta like high-OM soil and consistent moisture, but not wet feet.

Regardless, it shouldn't have much effect on splitting the plants. Prep a hole to put it into with a good amount of peat moss and a little SoilMoist (like a third or half a teaspoon). Keep it watered well after transplanting it.

Thanks Andy! That sounds like a very small amount of soilmoist. Will it do that much to help?

Yup - it holds a lot of water -- 200X its own weight. Don't overdo it - it can be bad.
