Are they encore azalea?
They commonly drop their leaves over Winter.

Re: Azellias Struggling
So are they in the process of growing back their leaves? All neighbors plants are vibrant with color right now...?

Sorry I did not see the question on my phone. I do not know the species. They are builder installed azellias. I am sure they are a generic inexpensive plant.turf_toes wrote:Are they encore azalea?

Hard to say without knowing the type. My non-encore azaleas do not drop their leaves. Have you examined the leaves?gwolf64 wrote:Sorry I did not see the question on my phone. Look underneath the leaf for signs of mite or other insect infestation.

In the close up photograph i posted there are some black spots on the leaves. Do you think they are sun burnt? They are in full sun.

Ha!gwolf64 wrote:I have a soul test if that helps.
I know that many azaleas can do quite well in full sun even in Alabama, but I thought I'd write to share that when grown in full sun they are much more susceptible to lacebug damage. I'm not particularly inclined to suggest that's the problem in this case, given the photos, but it's at least something to rule out.

Re: Azellias Struggling
I have 8 encore azaleas and none of them dropped their leaves during the winter. If your azaleas bloom year round (once in the spring, once in the summer, etc.) they are encore. If they only bloom in the spring, they're traditional azaleas.

Sounds like Mites or Lace bug infestation.gwolf64 wrote:In the close up photograph i posted there are some black spots on the leaves. Do you think they are sun burnt? They are in full sun.

Re: Azellias Struggling
Don't know what to tell you. I've had them three years and this is the first year they didn't drop all their leaves. Mild winter here though. Normally they're fine by May.ECUPirate wrote:I have 8 encore azaleas and none of them dropped their leaves during the winter. Don't think about how to kill them until you've verified and identified them. Lace bugs in particular are extremely easy to diagnose. Just look at Google images.
If you do have an infestation, then we'll talk.

Re: Azellias Struggling
When I hear problems with azaleas or Rhodys the first I think of is lacebugs. When looking at your photos I don't see any speckling that indicates lacebugs. Check the backsides is leaves for them. I think your going to have to dig a bit deeper.

Re: Azellias Struggling
I planted 4 encores last spring, they looked a little raggedy until the past month or so. Didn't look that much better than yours after this winter. They are looking great now. Let them get a few seasons behind them, they'll be fine.
