Hydrangea Bush - Possible Black Spot Fungus

Post by Casutherland » July 6th, 2016, 12:11 pm

Hey everyone,

I planted a Hydrangea bush in my back yard back in late March. It was really healthy and doing great to start out. It bloomed out well, and then started to go downhill the past two months. I started noticing black spots on the leaves as you can see in the picture sprayed the entire plant with a copper fungicide, in hopes that it would resolve the issue. However, the black spots persisted, and i decide to cut off all the leaves with black spot, and flowers as well.

Long story short, it has come back, and not produced any flowers since. The small flowers that were on the plant have also died.

Can anyone help me diagnose the issue, or help me treat the plant? I really would like for it to live. I guess I could always go get another one...

*Update* I treated this with some Copper Fungicide for plants, and it ended up dying at the end of the season this year. Time to try again.

Too much overhead watering maybe? Not enough sun? If you get heavy with the pruners you cut off the next years buds.

I am honestly not sure what type of Hydrangea it was. We purchased it at a wholesale nursery basically because my wife saw it and wanted it lol.

I agree. I was a newby back then on how to grow plants, and thought I needed to water it daily. Plus we were getting some cloudy and rainy days in April, which led to it dying by June/July. When I dug the plant up, it was sitting in water (partly because my soil is that crappy builders infill clay from new construction).

Sitting in water probably contributed to it dying. Well-draining soil is one thing they need.

Exactly..I am on a mission to fix that. I just don't really know what to do.
