Hearty Hibiscus Care in Maryland

I have a hearty hybiscus that I have been trimming to the ground in the winter. Now, this season. I only got one stalk from the plant as the old, cut branches are in the way. What am I doing wrong or what do I need to do this winter to get a full plant back? Thanks for the help!!!!

No idea what's wrong with the cutting, but cutting to ground level is the right thing. Mine doesn't emerge from the ground until Memorial Day in NY, but it grows to 5' tall by August 1st. I have no problems with mine other than needing to stake it, as it will break in a summer storm at 5' tall.

To get better info on the net, look up "Hardy Hibiscus" or "Rose Mallow".

Also, be sure to give it plenty of water. Remember, the species plants were native to wetland swamps. Another name for hardy hibiscus is swamp mallow. Of course, today's hybrids do quite well in the typical home garden, but a hell strip might be just too much hell for it. I prefer to grow mine in my wetlands and low areas. Far less maintenance required.
