Can anyone ID?

Post by PSU4ME » July 18th, 2022, 10:36 am

So this is a perennial and I got it from Lowes, want to say it was a “summer something”. Can’t remember it but want to say summer peach or princess.

Thanks TT, went searching for summer hydrangeas and found “summer crush”, looks like a positive ID to me. Thanks again!

Now, a warning. "NOW A WARNING?"

Those are incredibly water-demanding (hydrangea from Greek hydros, meaning water). Don't let it go dry or they wilt and look like they're dead. Even hot afternoons make them look lousy even if they're soaking wet (they'll recover when the sun goes down). And of course, they like full sun.

To intensify the colors, apply calcium. pH ranges of 6-7 will be weaker in terms of pinks and reds (my Nikko blue is pale blue to palest purple to almost white in this range; yours will still be pink and red). 7 to above 7, pinks and reds intensify dramatically. Definitely don't allow your pH to fall under about 6.

Hydrangea may require extra iron above about 6.5; mind that iron in ferrous sulfate form also lowers pH, so can counter the impact of calcium.

Never use aluminum sulfate to lower pH; lift the plant and dig in soil sulfur in the plant area, or use ferrous sulfate instead.

There's two types of hydrangeas right? My are more woody, shrubs and I've never watered them. Granted they're all established this point. Do the softer ones require more water?

The Latin translation for the word(s) hydrangea is literally “water barrel.”

So yes. They all require copious amounts of water.
