The Turn to Spring Is Coming!!

Post by andy10917 » February 11th, 2017, 10:05 am

Depending on your location, sometime between 10 days ago and two weeks from now, temperatures will stop falling day after day, and the trend toward both high daily highs and higher daily lows will begin. For me, it's around February 17th, but there are areas that have already achieved that point.

Smile!! It's coming....

It's crazy, mid 40s in the twin cities already. This winter is so not normal.

Ten days ago, here. Wednesday we hit 62°, which was...interesting, especially followed by our only snowfall so far this season on Thursday.

In the office and cellar, the season is already underway, and I began my annuals for the year this morning: http://thegreengreengrassofhome.blogspot.com/

Saw the first sign of Spring here in NJ today as some tulips started popping up in the bed behind the porch.

We had high 60's on Wed followed by low 30's and 4-5" of snow on Thursday and back up to high 50's today so most of the snow is gone

Tulips popping up here too. Also, saw some buds on my peony trees. Herbacious peonies likewise popping up.

We've had a couple 70 deg days now here. Crocuses are blooming, I may have even seen a forsythia in a really sunny spot blooming (not sure - don't hold me to that one!). But I can confirm that some of my daffodils bloomed for the first time this morning. Crazy weather, but after the multiple feet of snow last year, I'm OK with skipping a year of a real "winter".

I'm secretly hoping the mosquitoes hatch and then get nailed by a late frost. Zika virus, meet Global Warming...

It's currently 74° in the garden, down from a high of 77°. Of course, it's 80° in my home office with the windows wide open (I refuse to use the air conditioning in February), so I'm quite glad my day just ended. I'm going to go down to the cellar where it's in the sixties. :-)

Early March actually looks to feature some seasonably cold weather as the polar vortex thingy or whatever wobbles around a little.

I'm hoping we don't have another bud break and then a freeze like we did last year! I'm going to be spraying some dormant oil on my fruit trees i the next week or two here.....trying to do it befor bud break but i don't want it to freeze again. I've got things popping up everywhere and then we are supposed to be down to 25 this saturday......good grief.

This is one of my annual favorite posts to make. Down south, the turn to the days starting to be warmer for reasons other than randomness have started, an over the next 3 weeks the trend to the average day being warmer than the day before will start and move north. That said (there is hope!) it's still time to get in that mammoth nap...

The last two days have been like Whoa! And not just in terms of temps. Initial lawn green-up has started...we're past the peak of the brown. And I saw a swarm of insects this evening.
