Help identifying this weed

Post by gswartz » July 30th, 2019, 8:01 am

One of our dogs passed away yesterday. We had blood work done on him when he started having seizures and it showed that he likely ingested something toxic. This made us think about an area of our yard where he was hanging out and he has a history of eating every kind of flower he can get his mouth around. So we went back to look at where he was and found this weed or flower stalk chewed down. Obviously, it's too late to do anything about it, but I'm just curious if anyone knows what it is? Thanks.

I'm assuming you're focused on the wide-leafed weed in the upper center of the picture. While the weed is chewed up and missing its flower/seed stalks that make identification easier, could you find one with the seed head still intact?

But there *IS* something in the picture that is toxic to dogs - see that clover-like or shamrock-like plant in the background? I'll bet $100 that it has small yellow flowers and that's Oxalis. It is quite toxic, and even though it is bitter to most dogs, dogs with a real thing for grass and weed eating can get tremors and kidney damage from it when eaten.

Unfortunately I cannot find anymore like it. It's in a small patch of mulch and not all over the place through our yard. I also checked the clover like plant and I don't see any flowers around it but he might have eaten them.
