Finding a Property Marker?
OK, I've probed, hacked, pried, and located about three hundred rocks. What I haven't found are the property markers, but I'm shooting for a piece of long rebar with a yellow cap. Not easy. I know the approximate location within a foot or two or so.
Does anybody know a good way to locate these? I'm thinking of borrowing a stud finder and seeing if that will do it (some places say yes, some say no). I don't have access to a metal detector.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
Stud finders really don't work. They will find metal but I believe they work by measuring how dense the wall is. You have to keep them pressed to the wall constantly. See if you can't find a metal detector or just buy one and take it back once your done with it.

I just might do that. Or build my own by measuring inductance through a coil.

A metal detector would probably be best. You should ask around. You can also get halfway decent models for less than $100.

Maybe you're off in your search by about 7 feet and your neighbors are right.

Well I did not want to just come out and say it. Morph is trying to get gis property to look bigger from space.Michael Wise wrote:Maybe you're off in your search by about 7 feet and your neighbors are right.

It's probably gone; Did you have the property surveyed when you bought it? It may be easier to measure out from the house and reinstall another piece of rebar.MorpheusPA wrote:I know the approximate location within a foot or two or so.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
In Morph's case there can be several different scenarios as to why he can't find it:
1. His constant application of various organics has built up the soil to the point that the rebar is now hidden so far below the surface that he'll need an excavator to find it.
2. His microherd ate it!
3. The iron in the rebar has been rusted away due to the high iron levels of the soil.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
Any of these three are possible. I'm noticing the soil line is higher as I just had to do some adjustments on Myrtle's wires today. There's no way I buried those wires that deep, it would have taken forever!
At the very least I can definitively state that there are a ton of worms in the lawn and that the top three inches of soil has turned black. It also gave me the opportunity to evaluate root depth for the SunaGrow/SumaGreen test. There's no change.

The addition to the soil level is from all the worm poop!MorpheusPA wrote:Any of these three are possible. I'm noticing the soil line is higher as I just had to do some adjustments on Myrtle's wires today. There's no way I buried those wires that deep, it would have taken forever!

So I was thinking as the worms were...Displeased...by my presence there. In large numbers. Fortunately they can't attack or I would have had a phalanx of them coming after me.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
If you still have the survey from when you bought the property, you should be able to get close from that. If you built the house, you should be able to do the same thing from the blueprint of the house position on the lot.
Do you suppose worms can be trained into an army? That might take care of the problem.

I could be General Mammal of the Great Worm Army. With my 250,000 standing soldiers, I could take over the wor...er, a good chunk of PA.
Yep, I have both the title and the blueprints! Good idea!

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
I bet someone you know owns a metal detector... If you ask around.. you will find one...
Even a kid's metal detector should be able to find a big chunk of rebar...
Thanks

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
Another good idea. I'll start asking this weekend. I need the thing for about five minutes.
And that chunk of rebar is 3 feet long and half an inch wide. Mass? I dunno, but that's a big chunk of ferrous metal. Most of it probably too deep to detect easily, but part at least is not!

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
I'd feel so dishonest doing that, but if it's the only way to get it done...I just might.
Before that, I'd build my own and either test capacitance in the circuit or inductance. Either should be able to find me a bar of metal in the middle of a coil.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
Morph see if you can borrow one of these from the city. They work much better than a conventional metal detector on property stakes.

Is it wrong that the photo of that is a bit of a turn on? But I appreciate a good piece of equipment.

Re: Finding a Property Marker?
Is there any type of equipment rental stores in your town? I rented a metal detector from an equipment rental store when I needed a metal detector and the cost was minimal for a couple hours of rental time. That way you don't have to buy a metal detector and try and return it.
The other option is that if you have your house blueprints and property plat, the house plan usually shows dimensions to the property lines and pins. Use a measuring device from your house foundation outwards to find your pins.
