2016 Vegetable Garden
What are you guys planning on planting this year, and what do you already have in the ground? I currently have kale, romaine lettuce, and broccoli ready to harvest. I just transplanted squash and zucchini plants, as well as seeded okra and cucumbers last night. I also have a couple of strawberry bushes in a small brick planter on the patio, as well as a banana pepper, a "coolapeno" pepper, and a jalapeno pepper.
Even have my little helper helping me water!

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
Only potatoes and a couple tomatoes in the ground.
Got some disease in my tomato plants I started from seed, and had to destroy them. It may have actually been cold injury, but I didn't want to risk it. Bonnie can provide my plants this year.
Gonna try jalapeños this year.
Soon I'll plant squash, okra, and watermelon.
I'm seriously debating asparagus, but know that is a long term project.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
Thanks. I still have some straw I need to put down and clean up around the outside but overall, I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I have a smaller 4 x 4 raised bed, that isn't pictured, that I have my cucumbers in.Michael Wise wrote:Your garden looks great, BTW!
Does anyone have any recommendations on organic pesticides? I have Sevin dust but would like to try to not use chemicals if possible. Mites are currently eating my kale and broccoli leaves.

Not organic(I don't think), but you might research neem oil.

Garden Wish
I wish I had a garden. My mom does, and she grows a lot of cow horn peppers. If you like jalapeños you'll love cow horns (at least I do!). Nice looking garden, ECU!

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
This year I'm growing tomatoes (big boys and super sweet 100), green and jalopeno peppers, collards, broccoli, green beans, carrots, basil, oregano, parsley, and rosemary.
Everything has been enjoying all of the rain we've been getting the past two weeks!

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
I've got tomatoes, zucchini, basil, cilantro and peppers all doing well.
Garden is actually kind of a mess right now, volunteer tomato and basil plants coming up everywhere from the last several sessions.
The healthiest, largest tomato plants I have came up on their own, no idea what kind they are... I try to keep the garden organic, need to weed it.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
Rjr, you are way ahead of me. I'm just starting to see tomato and squash blooms and we are 2 weeks ahead of schedule this spring.
Your garden looks great.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
Thanks, in the Houston area we are usually able to plant as early as mid march provided you can protect young tomato and pepper plants from late season cold fronts and wind ( or should I say cool front, as the temp rarely gets below freezing). Tell you what though, you just can't beat a freshly picked vegetable from your own garden.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
That looks great rjr. Which picture has your sweet potatoes in it? I'd thought about growing sweet potatoes as well but wasn't sure how much room they would need and how much produce I would get from each plant.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
Dug up some early potatoes tonight. Forgot to snap a pic.
They were delicious though.
Yukon gold.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
The fourth picture has the sweet potatoes. I'll take some update garden pictures tomorrow if I get a chance. The rainfall we've had in Houston this year has been crazy. I'm battling bugs and fungus on all the garden veggies. Its really hard to garden in really wet years like this one.

Re: 2016 Vegetable Garden
The ones in the back look like cucumbers instead of squash.
Good looking garden either way.
