My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
It's that time - if you have a lot of shady area that needs attractive plants and you're between Zones 2 and 8, then my favorite bulk Hosta sale is on. Gilbert Wild and Sons has a "Hosta By The Handful" sale, where very nice (but not the absolute latest and greatest) hostas sell for $1 a piece (when 100 are bought). Once a year, they come down even more.
Right now, here's the deal:
10 for $22.50
25 for $45
50 for $67.50
100 for $90
These are hosta roots, and they will make OK-sized plants this year, and the plants will be full-sized in year 2-3 and beyond.
The sale is at Gilbert H Wild Hosta Sale. The discount code for the extra discount is HAND16. Orders over $75 ship free, and they have a tendency to ship extra plants, too.
PS: If you order using this, just reply to the thread -- I don't know if enough people care to make it worthwhile to post each Spring.

Hostas in Dallas
Might be a bit of a challenge, but here's an example of a lady who grows them in Dallas.

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
I'm in the market for some shady plants, but not until next year. I have a row of trees next to a creek that would be the best place for a hosta bed on my property, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet. I am not sure how I feel about having to split them what - once a year or so?

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
Nah, not at all. I have many that I never get around to, and they haven't been split in many years (8 yrs?). Despite Internet nonsense, there is no harm in leaving them alone. I found one that had 130+ eyes. That's ridiculous.

Good to know - I still need to wait until next year though - if this doesn't take off, I may ping you for a code next spring.

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
I just purchased from Gilbert five days ago and didn't know about this sale, but it wouldn't have applied to me always since I only purchased two hostas this year - my very first though! I don't have any more shady areas, but I could definitely see how they can become addicting.
I picked Blue Mouse Ears! I really liked it's blue-green leaves that'll go well with the kbg and it's lavender flowers that'll match the pink/purple/white color scheme I've chosen for the backyard.

I have mouse ears. Tiny but the color is nice against black mulch.

That's great to hear! Yeah I was only looking for a small hosta since they're going in a 2' wide mulch bed around the patio.

I got Bleeding Heart and Bethlehem Sage from them a few years ago. The Bethlehem Sage does very well in moderate shade. It's in bloom now.

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
Thanks, Andy! I'm chompin' at the bit to jump on this sale, including daylilies and irises, but we still have our hands full with too many other outdoor projects and don't yet have the various beds and forest areas ready to be planted in volume. Keep posting when it happens; I'm fairly certain that we'll be more than ready next spring.

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
Andy, we just recently bought a new property. I've never planted bare-root hostas, but would assume NC summer is probably a bad time to plant (shady, well watered area)?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
Oooooh!! You made the question about as close to the line as it can get. If you can keep them moist and you do it soon, you'll probably get 90% success. In July, that percentage would drop quite a bit.
