Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
My shipment of 100 mixed arrived yesterday (they didn't ship until early September).
I've read that you recommend soaking the roots in water hours before. I won't be able to plant then until Saturday, they ok in the box until then?
Canine eating hostas? Mr Wu?

Thanks for posting this. I'm thinking about getting some of these. How was the variety that you got, Andy? Pretty decent?

Would hostas do a decent job preventing erosion on the edge of a wooded ravine? It's really steep in spots and eroding pretty bad. I've considered throwing English Ivey in the mix too but it's so invasive I don't know if I want to go there. It would look really neat to have the whole side of the ravine plastered in hostas. It would take hundreds of not thousands though. I could start at the top and gradually work my way down.

Hosta roots aren't small, but they don't form the net-like fabric that's what you hope for on a ravine (to prevent erosion). I like Vinca Minor for slopes, and with a bit of creativity you can do a Vinca Minor underplanting to larger hostas, to keep it from being boring. Don't use smaller hostas as they won't compete and will get smothered over time.

Can't remember the name but I have a couple hostas that have more of a yellow color. They are planted in a space just outside of the canopy of a huge dogwood. Mostly morning, some afternoon sun. They are growing every year and getting bigger but the leaves are looking scorched.
I was under impression the yellow ones handle the sun better. Or is it just not watered enough? Don't know but I'm thinking I should move them.

That cuts the possibilities down to no more than a thousand. Can't remember the name but I have a couple hostas that have more of a yellow color.
Old wifes tale. Move them - if the cultivar/variety doesn't say sun-tolerant, it ain't sun-tolerant. Scorching seals the deal. They are growing every year and getting bigger but the leaves are looking scorched.

Re: My Favorite Hosta Sale (with Coupon Code!!)
I planted about 80% of my hostas this weekend. I ordered 100, ended up with closer to 110.
I actually took them out of the box 5 days before and threw them in the wheelbarrow, put them in the shade and allowed the sprinklers to mist them. I'd say 15-20% of them threw up small leaves in that time. They all look pretty anxious to take off.

After searching for Vinca Minor I have to say that would look awesome as a ground cover. Having Hostas throw in the mix would really make it stand out. You can get over 1000 Vinca Minor starts for less than $100 too. Add that to the free Hostas I'll be snagging from my mom the price will come out just right. Thanks for the suggestion Andy.andy10917 wrote: ↑September 15th, 2017, 7:58 pmHosta roots aren't small, but they don't form the net-like fabric that's what you hope for on a ravine (to prevent erosion).
