Hosta Fertilizing - Blood Meal

Post by Casutherland » March 25th, 2018, 1:53 pm

I picked up a 3 lbs bag of blood meal today to fertilize my 10 or so hosta plants. They have started a leaf out slighty. Is now the best time to fertilize them, or should I wait? How much should I use per hosta?

I spread almost a handful over the approximate root zone of the full-grown plant, which is roughly the same size as the plant at midseason size. If the plant is small, cut that to half a handful.

It can be repeated about once every six weeks.

Is blood meal the best fertilizer for Hosta. I hastily transplanted about two hundred, in the dry heat last July/August. Both my mom and brother bought and sold houses. Obviously the timing wasn't great. I wont know for another few weeks but I would be happy with a 60% survival rate. The ones that make it are going to need all the help that they can get.

As a general fertilizer, I love Milorganite. In synthetics, a balanced fertilizer is good. Blood Meal is good, but you have to be careful not to get the leaf growth ahead of the root growth - that is a problem when it gets hot.
