Backflow preventer dripping

I apologise if this is a dumb question. my backflow preventer is leaking around the inlet side PVC elbow. The inlet and outlet pipes are not perfectly parallel, so it takes a little bit of effort to get the preventer screwed on. I don't know if this is causing stress and the leak. Is there a sealant that I could use or is leaking here indicating a backflow problem?
