Anyone Here a Fan of "Ramps" in Spring?

Post by andy10917 » April 23rd, 2015, 10:49 pm

(please skip the off-ramp and on-ramp jokes)

Does anyone else here spend any time hunting for "Ramps" in the woods in the Spring?? My CIA-trained chef son showed up at the house this evening with lbs of Ramps he'd found in the woods (took away sustainable quantities). God, they're a delicious gift of early Spring.

Mushrooms???

Morels are the prize here. They like to grow along the ridge top of my timberland but get harvested pretty quickly by mushroom hunters.

Ramp Breath

I've been told that garlic/onion breath doesn't hold a candle to ramp breath. Are they really that strong?

No. But they are so addictive that you eat a ton.

Yeah! .... right?
He's hunting for wild leek.

Seen this at my local store last week. Yellows and greys.
(Leeks were 79 cents a pound)

Only a guy that has never tasted Ramps would ever compare them to store-bought Leeks. Pretty ease to spot the folks like that...

Late to the party as usual but ramps are festival food in southeast Tennessee (skip the ramp tramp jokes please). My dad was the ranger (1960 - 1965) where this festival is held, as a kid I remember him bringing home ramps and Mom making him cook them outside because she could not stand the smell.

A large chunk of our property is a forest. This discussion about ramps has me thinking about sowing some seeds in the fall...
