Filet Mignon on the Jumbo Joe

Post by HanLawn » December 1st, 2015, 12:22 am

This little portable grill packs a punch, served dinner for 12 and was able to fit it all on the grate. Used Wicked Good lump charcoal and the steaks came out awesome.

Nice. A friend recently bought a "Big Green Egg."

I had never heard of it. But it's a pretty amazing charcoal grill. He can bbq or smoke from it. He can stick a few pieces of charcoal in it and the grill stays hot for hours. It's pricey. But having seen it in action, I'm considering getting one myself.

Wow! That looks delicious. That doesn't look like the stock grill grate, so what's up with that?

Check out the Kamado Joe. It was also a friend who got me interested in cooking on a ceramic. He had a Big Green Egg, but the standard features/accessories included with the Kamado Joe convinced me to go that route. I don't own it anymore, but had no complaints - very versatile. I even baked artisan bread, pizzas, etc. on it.

That is a Craycort cast iron grate, excellent for this small grill in particular,as it is thick and heavy and holds the heat so it minimizes heatloss when opening the lid {thermal mass}. Also creates great grill marks,if you are into that.

The downside is that the grate cost more than the entire grill, and it doubles the weight of the grill......not necessarily a good thing for a portable grill if you plan to carry it around, say for tail gating, etc I held on to the stock grate for that reason, but have not used it since getting the Craycort.

Big green egg is a wonderful cooking tool,to heavy to be a portable, but otherwise a quality piece- you will be an "egghead" as its followers are knicknamed. We have 3 egg dealers in town and they frequently cook on them in front of their stores as advertising. The biggest one sells for $4,000.....not a mis-type.

PS- you can also smoke on any standard weber kettle- I have smoked pulled pork{boston butt} and even ribs on the jumbo joe and both came out amazing.

I have fun with it......the hobby sucks you in,just like lawncare! I daily follow 3 great bbq forums- weber kettle club, bbq brethren, and the virtual weber bulletin board....between the 3,anyone can master both grilling and smoking rather easily.

Sexier than the lovely Craycort is that fantastic Trex decking!

To be honest,I am not a big fan of Trex decking- it seems "spongy" to me compared to wood decks.

Not a fan

Post by dfw_pilot » December 2nd, 2015, 11:27 pm

Sorry to hear you aren't a fan. I wonder if there is an install problem vs the decking itself. After having just repainted my daughters' playset, I would think a Trex style deck would be fantastic.

Not sure, original builder put it in.I recall reading something that mentioned the underlying "joists" are to be spaced closer together as compared to building a wood deck,so who knows if that was done correctly? The hot sun seems to make the Trex feel flexible under foot compared to wood though.

Upgraded from the Weber to the Big Green Egg a few months ago. The wife bought it for me for my birthday and I love it. HanLawn you can officially call me an EggHead. Check out the main forum sometime... you will get very hungry very fast.

So far I have cooked.... pork shoulder, ribs, whole chicken, whole turkey, burgers, pizza, and much much more. Everything has been great.
