Deck drainage around posts

Post by Ralpal » April 9th, 2015, 11:45 am

Not sure if this is the correct forum but have a question about drainage around deck posts. The previous owner had mulched / landscaped all the way to the deck posts which is starting to cause early stages of rot. I dug the soil out from around the posts down to the concrete but this made it worse since now there is standing water as you can see from the picture after this morning's storms. My plan is to dig a channel following the slope on the right side of the sidewalk and filling with river rock similar to the left side of the sidewalk. Will that be sufficient for drainage or is there some other technique folks use for drainage around posts.?

Cheers

It would be easier if they were with laterals and above grade. Not happening, right?

That would be more work than I am willing to take on. My best guess looking at the posts is they were above grade at one point then they landscaped and added the raised bed.

Dig out soil and stack concrete blocks on top of existing footing, then cut wooden post to length. Do it one post at a time and you will only need one temporary post while you work.

Secure the concrete block with anything or will the gravity / weight be enough?
