Container Plants

Post by HoosierLawnGnome » June 30th, 2016, 12:54 pm

Mrs. HoosierLawnGnome bought 2 big 19" wide by 22" deep containers for me to plant something tall in for the front porch.

It is partially sunny at best - morning sun.

Any advice here? I'm new to this.

I'm thinking a couple tall topiaries or blue spruce type plants with flowers at the base.

It's a pretty shady spot by my front door. I am propagating some red Stewartson azaleas to plant in them. My wife is a fan of their evergreen look, I'm a fan of their red flowers in the spring - and I *think* they'll do well in a container with lots of shade.

The big challenge my wife and I have had with container plans is that all of the soil in the container reaches much lower temperatures in the Winter. That's because (unlike the soil of the ground), the container is exposed to air temperatures at/below zero on three sides. We lost many container plants this way.

Mrs. Andy10917 now plants containers at soil level in the nursery bed for the Winter, and losses are much lower.

My wife doesn't want to bring them inside. Too much hassle. That limits what we can do. she would be happy with just an arborvitae in them but I can't go that simple. I have some boxwood I'm propagating too that would be nice to shape.

I don't mind wheeling them into the garage the first winter anyways.

Sounds nice. Thanks for sharing. I asked because we have similar conditions up by the front door. Containers would be well suited for us also.
