Seeding small areas in the spring.
I've been reading a lot online about lawn care and I'm basically starting off with a horribly neglected lawn. This season. I planed to do all the best practices and see what happens. I know my whole property needs major work, but Rome wasn't built in a day. I have e a few spots where trees were removed last winter. The area is cleaned up and covered over. I need a bit more top soil to level it. It's about 5'x5'. I was planing on using a preemergent in the spring to control the crabgrass. Can I avoid the bare patches, seed and see what happens or is it. Just going to be a total waste and leave the dead spots and seed in the fall.

Pre-emergent will prevent grass from growing. So do not apply it where you are seeding.
However Scotts has a starter fertilizer with pre-emergent that does allow grass seed to germinate. You would use that where you are seeding. Then when the grass is strong enough you use the regular pre-m as the starter doesn't last as long.

Nice, that sounds like it should work. If the grass doesn't all make it through the summer you can always try again in the fall?

Do you put the seed and the Scott's down at the same time?

Yup! Just be sure to give it water this summer. Once its growing its easy to forget the roots are shallow so it will need more frequent watering than an established lawn.
